Pro-Life Speech on Abortion
by Lauren Martindale
2007
God gives every human being the gift of life. Along with that precious opportunity, He gives each the ability to create more life. Every individual is an outlet of the beauty of the Creator, which plants a great responsibility on those who bring harm to any of His children. Every day, about 432,000 babies are brought into the world, but in that same day, the world is robbed of 126,000 of them by means of abortion. Some argue that abortions are acceptable in cases of rape, incest, fetal abnormalities, or danger to the mother's health. However, 95% of all abortions are performed as a means of birth control. Only 1% are done as a result of rape or incest, another 1% because of fetal abnormalities, and only 3% are due to the mother's health risks. These statistics are concrete support of the abolition of abortion.
In addition, imagine that a single decision to have an abortion could deter or prevent the cure for cancer or the foundation of world peace. It is frightening to think of the effects of interrupting God's plan for humanity, but even more disturbing to picture the physical process.
The third edition of the American Heritage Dictionary defines abortion as the induced termination of pregnancy before the fetus is viable. This definition fails to emphasize that termination takes place before the fetus has the opportunity to become capable of living outside of the uterus. Nevertheless, it is still alive and has complete potential to develop into a fully functioning human being. Intentional killing of any living thing with a soul is completely unethical and morally degrading. Humans, who pride themselves so much on being superior to the "animal kingdom," have lowered their status to that of an animal by entering the practice of abortion because murder of one's own kind requires crude heartlessness.
A Planned Parenthood advertisement once stated, "Seventy-seven percent of anti-abortion leaders are men. One hundred percent of them will never be pregnant." Very few men can authentically understand the lifelong emotional hardship of having an abortion and not one of them can feel it. Most women eventually overcome the physical pain of having life ripped from their bodies, but the sadness that accompanies the process is inerasable. Some even slide into temporary or permanent depression. Even those who make their own decision to have an abortion feel sudden emptiness and a sense of wrongdoing, which shows the gravity of their action. Abortion in any stage consists of murder.
American approval of abortion is due to a severe lack of respect for life. A prime example of this is that one of the country's leading hospitals throws aborted babies into waste incinerators. Since these incinerators are used for garbage, does that mean we equating garbage with human life?
Please, indulge me for a minute. Close your eyes and imagine a woman about 70 years old. Let's name her Ruth. It's a beautiful day and all five of her children and nine grandchildren are visiting to celebrate her birthday. Her children are all special and unique in some way. She marvels at them and smiles wistfully as she watches them enjoy each other's company. At the same time, her eyes fill with tears that she tries desperately to hide as she meets the eyes of her youngest son. His doctor recently told him that he needed to have a kidney transplant. All of his siblings volunteered to donate one of theirs and each was tested but not one was a match.
Ruth spent her days and nights wondering about the child that she aborted in a small, depressing bedroom many, many years ago…years before her perfect marriage, years before achieving all of her career goals and years before finally giving birth to her five children…she wondered if that unborn child would have been the angel to donate his or her kidney to save the life of her youngest.
Let us also imagine the lives of all teenage girls who discover that they are carrying another life within them. Their world comes crashing down around them as they sit in silence. They wait for an answer, a solution, an alarm clock to wake them up from the nightmare. After experiencing the terrifying reality of the consequences, they are taken aback by the wonder of God's creation. How is it that one can produce an entire human being with functioning organs, an individual personality, a mind? This is only part of the amazement that is destroyed by every human who does nothing to end the reality of abortion. Discussion is only the first step in the seemingly impossible journey to end abortion in any form. Just think, we can more quickly find the cure for AIDS once we find the cure for abortion. Thank you.
